Catholic Church, Azimganj

Along with the Don Bosco Welfare Centre there was also the Parish at Azimganj which paved the way for the growth of the Santhal mission in Murshidabad. It was erected in 1967 on the piece of land bought by Fr. Vincent Lazarro in 1964. It was Fr. J. Gimenez who gave the requisite thrust to the work of the parish. He built a parish house, a convent for the Sisters of Charity and a school with boarding for girls, crowning his works with the construction of the Parish Church dedicated to St. John Bosco on 11 November 1973. During the tenure of Fr. Francis Moonamvayalil two new parishes, Polsonda More and Monigram, were carved out of Azimganj. Fr. Francis started a boarding for the primary school children and a hostel for the college-going boys in the parish premises.

Today pastoral care for over 800 families spread over 13 substations and serving the young through a boarding for about 150 primary school children are works of prime concern. There is also College Hostel which houses the Santal Documentation Centre. Village development programmes such as house-building for the poor, adult literacy programmes, helth progrmmes, Primary Schools in villages, and youth ministry through groups and associations, keep the ministry fresh and vibrant.
