History: Fr. Vincent Lazzaro began working in the village of Choyghoria when he was parish priest at Shimulia, now in Bangladesh. In 1964 it became a parish with Fr. Julius Matteucci as the parish priest. In 1971 Thakurnagar, one of its centers, became a new parish. On 22 November 1975 Bongaon was detached from the diocese of Krishnagar and attached to the Archdiocese of Calcutta, which re entrusted the mission to the Salesians for a period of 30 years with effect from 8 May 1976. The opening of a boarding school by Fr. Varghese Edattukaran in 1980 gave a youthful dimension to the parish.
Today Today pastoral care of the people and a primary school with a hostel are activities of prime interest. Social work activities like education through sponsorship programmes and building houses for the poor are carried out. The various groups and associations, such as Vincent de Paul Society, Mothers' Groups (one for older and another for young mothers), parish choir, Altar Boys' sodality and a Unit of the Catholic Association of Bengal (CAB) are activities that contribute much to the welfare of the people in this rural set up. | |
