History: Berhampore Parish was founded in 1855 by the Milan Fathers, but closed down in 1864 when their leader Fr. Parietti died. It was entrusted to the Salesians in 1928, as a part of Krishnagar diocese. It was reopened as a residential parish in 1955 by Fr. Vincent Lazarro who built there a new church. Later Fr. John Schilder opened a primary school. In 1966, with the opening of a centre at Azimganj, the Santal mission was looked after from there. From 1978 under the leadership of Fr. Sebastian Kuzhipala a dozen substations were opened and the Salesian works took on greater proportion. On 20 February 2000, Darafnagar was established as a new parish and handed over to the diocese. Currently Kandhi Mission under this parish is being pioneered by Fr. David Mondol.
Today Berhampore Parish is a vibrant centre, catering for the Catholics of Berhampore town and many neighbouring villages with varied ethnic groups. The Old Church has been demolished and a larger one was built in its place in 2003. There is a hostel for primary children with facilities for coaching classes. The parish activities for development and social welfare are carried out in 11 sub-stations. Associations like the YCS, Legion of Mary and Don Bosco Past Pupils are also active. | |
