History: Don Bosco Yuva Jyoti was begun in 1997 at the initiative of Fr. Scaria Nedumattathil who began the project for a non-formal training centre for school dropouts and unemployed youth. It was formally inaugurated on 15 March 1998. The Centre offers non-formal vocational training courses in Motor Driving, Auto Engine Maintenance, Electricals, Auto electricals, Machinist's training and Tailoring. Each course lasts 6 months.
In 1999 Prison Ministry was also added to the apostolic activities of the community. In that year permission was granted to conduct the same vocational training schemes of DBYJ in the Central Prison of Berhampore. In 2000 Vocational training facilities were extended to Lalgola Open Jail, 55 km from Berhampore. Numerous activities have been conducted in the local Prison to uplift the inmates psychologically and spiritually. A regular Driving Course is conducted for the Prisoners with the hope of giving them a livelihood once they are back in the mainstream society.
Other social development schemes are also executed by Don Bosco Yuva Jyoti, such as relief during natural calamities, low cost house construction, assistance for education to children in need, a hostel for poor boys, and assistance to the families of the prison inmates.
