History: Nestling among the Himalayan hills is the four-storeyed building where the Salesian students along with others do their regular B.A. studies and at the same time complete their Philosophical studies as part of their priestly training. It is, therefore, a Major Seminary for Candidates to the Priesthood where young Salesians are equipped to face the challenges of their future work as educators of the young.
It was first established in Shillong when it obtained affiliation up to the I.A. standard from Calcutta University in 1935. In 1936 the college building was destroyed by fire. For two years it was at 'Woodcott,' (Kurseong) and Bandel. It then acquired a permanent house at Sonada (Darjeeling) in 1938 in the form of an adapted brewery of Meakins & Co. In 1948 the first part of the new building was inaugurated and the College got affiliation for the B.A. degree courses. The remaining part was completed in 1954. The fourth storey was completed in 1979, while the modifications in the right wing took place in 1986. In 1962 the College was affiliated to the University of North Bengal. In 1970 and 1979 it was approved for B.A. (Hons.) in English and History respectively. The College also offers Pass Course in Philosophy, Education and Economics. Since June 1999 the College has been opened to the general public, both boys and girls, for admission as day scholars. Since three years some seminarians of the neighbouring dioceses are also receiving their Philosophical formation and graduation degree along with the Salesian clerics.
Apart from the regular academic and religious formation the Clerics are engaged also in Developmental activities through Village Youth Centres, Scholarship programmes, Typewriting and spoken English classes for local youth, Youth camps and Computer classes, thus making Salesian College an agent for social change in this Himalayan region. | |
