HISTORY: The Diamond Harbour Centre was looked after by the priests of Morapai Parish originally. Later on it bacame part of Thakurpukur Parish. When the Pillar Fathers took over the Parish of Gangarampur Diamond Harbour came under their care for a year. On 8th December 2001, the Parish of Diamond Harbour was erected and given to the care of the Salesians. Since that day Fr. M.C. Francis rented a flat at Kopat Hat, Diamond Harbour, and started residing there. The nucleus of the Christian Community live at Noongola village by the Hooghly riverside. A decent chapel was built for them by Fr. Polgar S.J. in 1972.There are seven families living in this area which was originally the cemetery of the British. At Noorpur the Missionary Brothers of Mother Teresa have a home called Nobojibon Ashram where more than 170 mentally and physically handicapped persons are looked after by nine brothers. This center also comes under our Diamond Harbour Parish. There are also seven christian families living at Noorpur At Kulpi village too there are fifteen families of Christians living by the riverside. A small chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built and blessed there on 24th December 2003. A coaching centre for primary children is also being conducted there. In a village called Kamarpole some hindu families had come over and accepted the Christian the Faith in 1972. There are six such families there at present. A coaching centre for primary school children is also conducted there. There is a prawn processing factory at Raichowk where there are over hundred girls from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh working. Among the Kerala girls more than thirty of them are Catholic and the Diamond Harbour Parish looks after their spiritual needs. There are also some Christians at Horinbari in Sagor Island .This center is also looked after by Diamond Harbour parish. A coaching center for primary children is conducted also there. |
