History: With the aim of fulfilling the needs of the locality for an English Medium School, the land at Park Circus was purchased on 24 January 1955. Fr. Guido Colussi saw to the construction of the building, and on 15 January 1958 the school was inaugurated. The Primary Section received its recognition on 5 August 1959 and the High School on 1 July 1963. It was recognized as a Higher Secondary School on 18 March 1964. Currently the School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, that replaced the Cambridge Examination Board and sends up students for the ICSE and ISC examinations. Keeping up-to-date with the times, multimedia education was introduced in the school in 2000.
Today the School has over 3000 students doing ICSE and ISC. 20% of these students receive concession/ free education.
The school organizes a number of co-curricular activities related to academics such as Debates, Elocution, One Act play, Sit and Draw, Quizzes, Creative Writing, Science Exhibition, Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Stamps Exhibition, Story Telling, and Computer Programming. Intra-school and inter-school games related activities such as, Football, Basketball, Carroms, Chess, Badminton, Cricket, Tennis and Rowing are also conducted.
Various clubs and interaction groups exist in the school. They are: Interact Club, Cyber Space Club, Science and Nature Club, Dominic Savio Sports and Games Club, The Young Christian Students, The Leadership Training Service, The Philatelic Club, Media and Cultural Club, The Scouts and Cubs, The Karate Club, Table Tennis Club, Spoken English Group and Music Groups.
A special feature of the school is that every student of Classes 8 to 12 take part in the Social Awareness Days organized by the school. Every class has to take up a project to prepare towards a day they have to spend in the company of the inmates of any of the Social Service Institutes in the city. They interact with them and report back their experiences.
DON BOSCO TECHNICAL SCHOOL The Technical School was started in 1965 to give the local youth a trade in hand to enable them to earn their livelihood. The Technical School received its affiliation for the ITI on 15 June 1981.
DBTI offers the facility for doing the ITI Examinations, the City and Guilds of London Institute Examinations, CVE for Mechanical and Electronics Engineering and Computer Science and possibilities for Non-formal training in a number of trades.
180 students attend the formal courses of ITI, City and Guilds of London Institute and the Certificate of Vocational Education Examinations in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science.
An average of 280 students annually attend Non-formal and Job oriented courses in 15 trades. These students are school dropouts and youth of lower middle class from Kolkata and around. Secretarial practice for girls and IT for ITI students have been also begun since 2000.
DON BOSCO NIGHT SCHOOL A Night School was begun in 1967 for the primary education of the less privileged of the locality. The initiative for this was taken by the Don Bosco Past Pupils.
The Night School caters to the poor children of the neighbourhood with 500 children from K.G. to Class V.
Currently, a free Adult Literacy Centre is also being looked after by the Past Pupils' Association for about 400 girls and women of the locality. | |
