History:
Kalimpong is a bustling and rapidly expanding, though still relatively small, bazaar town, set amongst the rolling foothills and deep valleys of the Himalayas, at an altitude of 1250 metres. One of the prominent towns of Darjeeling district, it offers bright prospects for a Salesian presence in the vocational education sector. With this mind in 1997 a plot of land was purchased at 14th Mile in Kalimpong.
In 1999, Fr. George Thirumalachalil took up residence in the property. A year later he began the construction of a non formal Vocational Training Centre. It was inaugurated in 2003. There is also a hostel attached, where boys from far away villages are given boarding in order to complete their training. Currently there are about a 100 boys and girls learning various trades.
