History:
The first chapel in Chapra was built in 1929. It remained a sub-station of Boborpara and in 1935 was attached to Ranabondo. A new church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1959 and blessed on 20 March 1960 by Rt. Rev. L.R. Morrow. The Parish House was built at the same time by Fr. Austin Guarneri. On 1 January 1962 Chapra was raised as a fullfledged parish with Fr. Cesare Sergi as its first Parish Priest. Fr. Julius Matteucci brought about commendable improvements in the parish, notable among them being the settlement of wandering Catholics in permanent colonies. The present Church was built in the place of the old one by Fr. Matteucci and blessed on 19 October 1986.

Sacred Heart Church, Chapra is one of the biggest parishes in the diocese of Krishnagar and is the nursery for vocations to priesthood and religious life. The Sisters of Mary Immaculate set up a convent and a school in 1963. Besides running the boarding, primary and high school, and a hospital, the SMI sisters are engaged full time in the parish apostolate.

Since its inception, the Salesian house had been looking after this parish without any definite time bound contract. In August 2006 the Parish was divided and it was handed back to the Diocese.  The Salesian House was closed down through a canonical decree, and is thus no more a Salesian Presence.
