History: In 1957 Fr. John Topno, while staying at Berhampore, got interested in the Santals of Murshidabad. In his zeal to help them he contacted several villages. In 1964 Fr. Sergi was asked to build the centre at Azimganj. With these background pioneering efforts, Don Bosco Welfare Centre, Azimganj was founded on 16 July 1966 with the opening of the boarding school with 26 Santal boys. The Sisters of Charity arrived in 1972. They care for the Santal girls at the Primary and High School levels and conduct a one year "Grihini" Course for older girls. The construction of the new school building was begun in 1976 by Fr. G. Alakulam. Fr. Sebastian Alencherril started Non-formal Training sections in carpentry and tailoring, but the experiment did not last very long. Fr. Joseph Cherian procured land at the neighbouring Chandabag to make the centre self-sufficient and to impart agricultural training to the boys. The Bengali medium Co-educational High School received the Governmental recognition on 6 May 1983.
Today: There exist a Boarding for 215 Santal tribal boys from classes 5 to 10, a co- ed day school for 1200 students (Primary and Secondary), various youth services through Youth Fests, Inter club, inter school, and inter village Sports activities. The Football team of the school has played at district and State levels. Associations for Past Pupils, Scouts, NCC, are active.
Through the Don Bosco Development Office, Kolkata, a project was initiated to construct houses for the poorer families. 40 houses have been built so far. Adult literacy programmes are being envisaged by the Past Pupils' Association. | |
