Don Bosco's Salesian Family |
Don Bosco's work of the Oratories began in 1841 "with a simple catechism lesson" and subsequently spread in response to pressing needs and situations. His work rapidly became a world-wide affair, promoting human development and the spread of the Gospel values.
He clung always to the idea of collaboration, and this was a "seed" that became a tree. Various congregations and associations came into being, all dedicated to the mission for youth. He himself founded not only the Salesian Society but also the Salesian Sisters and the Association of Salesian Cooperators. These live in communion with each other, share the same spirit and, with specifically distinct vocations, continue the mission he began. Together with these groups and with others born later we make up the Salesian Family. At present the number of officially recognised groups of the Salesian Family of Don Bosco is twenty one. Requests for recognition from more than twenty other groups are under consideration.

STRENNA 2005
"On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the ending of the Second Vatican Council, and in the light of Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes, which have enabled us to see the Church as a Mystery, the People of God, the Body of Christ, the Mother of believers and Servant of the world, we are conscious as members of the Salesian Family that "it is the Church's task to reflect the light of Christ in every historical period, to make his face shine also before the generations of the new millennium" (NMI 16). And so, reliving that extraordinary event,
WE COMMIT OURSELVES TO REJUVENATE THE FACE OF THE CHURCH, THE MOTHER OF OUR FAITH."
