Empowering Youth through Education and Skill-training
Our Vision
The Salesians of Kolkata Province, are a committed community who are deeply aware of our identity and specific charism of education for the young. Together with the other members of the Salesian Family and with the lay collaborators, including those of other faiths, we share the vision of Don Bosco, in being signs and bearers of God's love to the young, especially the poor and marginalized, through our reciprocal formation, shared responsibility, accountability and thus imparting value based education, skill training and formation to the youth who come in contact with us. Thus we proclaim and realize God's kingdom of love, peace and justice.

Profile
Don Bosco Development Society, Calcutta is the development wing of the Salesian Province of Kolkata. It was registered as a society on 19 August 1996. Its members are Salesians representing the various development activities undertaken in the province.
DB-DOC's development interventions in the province can be listed as follows
1. Education for the poor and tribal children
- Night schools, open schools and coaching centres in cities
- Local medium primary and high shools, hostels and coaching centres in villages
2. Vocational Training
- Skill-training to the youngsters through formal, nonformal and vocational training centres
- DB-DOC helps these centres through planning, projects, scholarships and evaluation.
3. Street Children
- Empowerment of street children through rehabilitation, skill-training and education.
- While in training they are encouraged to earn. With what is earned an account is opened in the bank. When they finish their training a corresponding sum is deposited by the society so that the young man can now purchase a plot of land and build his own house.
4. Village Development
- Barefoot Veterinary Training
- Agro-animal Training
- Housing Scheme
Style and Methodology
The style is participatory and the work begins at the grass-root level. A nine-step methodology is followed

1. Local community proposes the project (with the help of DBDOC)
2. The local council studies and passes it.
3. It is sent to the provincial council for approval and passed-on to the DB-DOC office
4. DB-DOC goes to the local community and formulates the project in detail
5. Project proposal is sent to the financial commission for study
6. The financial commission sends it to the provincial council for approval
7. DB-DOC makes modifications if and when so directed by the provincial council
8. DB-DOC sends the project to the funding agency
9. follow up of the implementation and maintenance of the project by DBDOC
